New partner brings added planning expertise to Wragge & Co

Wragge & Co has appointed a new partner, boosting its planning capability in the infrastructure, property development and regeneration sectors. SJ Berwin planning partner Duncan Field is joining the Planning and Regeneration team in the spring.

Senior partner Quentin Poole said: "Duncan's strong reputation as an eminent figure in UK planning will be a superb addition to the firm's real estate offering. In particular, his development expertise across infrastructure projects, city centre regeneration schemes and planning-related litigation will provide an advantage as the economy grows again."

Duncan Field said: "Wragge & Co has a lot to offer, including one of the UK's leading real estate practices and an excellent track record in property development, infrastructure and local government. I will be working closely with the rest of the Planning and Regeneration team to enhance its already strong reputation and firmly establish its presence in London. I am arriving at a time of expansion and growth, and am looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead."

After qualifying as a barrister in 1994, Duncan Field worked at Simmons & Simmons and Richards Butler. He joined SJ Berwin's Planning & Environment Group in 1999, becoming a partner in 2005. Duncan Field advises on a full range of planning, environmental and compulsory purchase issues. He brings considerable experience of retail development, mixed-use regeneration schemes and infrastructure projects.

This experience includes the development of several landmark buildings in Regent Street and a number of other regeneration schemes across London. He also advised on the development of both London City and London Luton airports, as well as the Northern Gateway Container Terminal at Teesport.

Applauded for his "conscientious style and experience of handling both commercial and residential developments" (Chambers UK 2012), Duncan Field has been described as "an absolute pleasure to work with" (Legal 500 2011). He is a member of the Anglo-American Real Property Institute, the National Infrastructure Planning Association, the Compulsory Purchase Association and the Airport Operators Association.

Wragge & Co's 17-lawyer Planning and Regeneration team advises on planning issues, social housing, public procurement and compulsory purchase schemes. The team handled the planning aspects of Development Securities plc's 'Hammersmith Grove' development, a 1.5-acre site next to Hammersmith station which is being developed into two prime office buildings covering 275,000 sq ft.

Duncan Field is the second senior figure to join the team in six months. His appointment follows that of planning and regeneration director Richard Beckingsale in August last year. The Planning and Regeneration team is part of the firm's 180-lawyer Real Estate group, one of the UK's largest real estate practices.

Providing a sector-focused service, Wragge & Co's real estate specialists act for investors, developers, major corporates, financial institutions, housing associations and local authorities in the UK and worldwide. Duncan Field's appointment takes the total number of real estate partners to 32.

Other real estate highlights from the past 12 months include US private equity firm Blackstone's £600 million acquisition of the Mint Hotel chain and Queensberry Real Estate LLP's £110 million retail development agreement with Newport Council.
