Wragge & Co advises Partnerships for Renewables on market-leading renewable energy deal
Wragge & Co LLP Energy Infrastructure team is advising Partnerships for Renewables (PfR) on proposals to generate renewable energy at UK canal and riverside locations. Working alongside British Waterways, the proposals spearhead the use of public sector land for wind turbines.
PfR and British Waterways plan to build 50 wind turbines over a five-year period, with a capacity to generate 100 megawatts of electricity. The turbines could deliver annual savings of 100,000 tonnes of CO2 and generate power for 45,000 homes. PfR, backed by HSBC's Environmental Infrastructure Fund, will cover the costs of development and advise on the selection of appropriate sites.
Derek Goodban is leading the team. Real estate associate Helen Emmerson and solicitor Mark Yarnold are advising on the land options for the sites. The team is working alongside Andrew MacDonald and Stephen Ainger, chief executive, of PfR.
Derek Goodban said: "This landmark deal could pave the way to more public organisations using their land to generate renewable energy. It is a great pleasure to work with PfR on this exciting venture. We have a long-established relationship with the organisation and a deep understanding of PfR's objectives. Our appreciation of the environmental and commercial drivers behind renewable energy use makes us well placed to advise."
Stephen Ainger, chief executive of PfR, said: "Partnerships for Renewables was established to help create a thriving public sector renewable energy market. Because no company had successfully entered the market, or developed a package that would unlock it, we had to start from scratch. Input from Wragge & Co was invaluable in creating the package we now offer to the public sector."
Partnerships for Renewables was founded by Carbon Trust Enterprises in 2006. It is an independent organisation, helping public sector bodies to put underused land to better use by working with them to plan, develop, construct and operate wind and other renewable energy projects.
