Wragge & Co helps Stafford Borough Council deliver new leisure centre

10.04.08

Wragge & Co LLP Planning and Regeneration team has advised Stafford Borough Council on its deal with Trent City Securities for the development of a £15 million leisure centre.

Trent City Securities has built a new state-of-the-art leisure complex comprising an eight-lane swimming pool, teaching pool, gym, fitness studio, squash courts and sports hall. Under a land swap deal, Trent City Securities takes possession of Stafford's old leisure centre site, which it will redevelop with a mixed-use retail and residential scheme.

Wragge & Co associate Jacqueline Knox led the Wragge & Co team assisted by solicitor Sarah Punshon. Associates Jan Hebblethwaite and Catherine Davis advised on planning and construction law issues. The team worked closely with Alistair Welch, Head of Law and Administration at Stafford Borough Council. DWF and Cobbetts acted for Trent City Securities.

Jacqueline Knox said: "This deal will deliver two new developments, ensuring that Stafford has first-class leisure facilities plus further substantial investment in its retail offer. It was a pleasure to help our client achieve its objectives, and ahead of schedule."

Alistair Welch said: "Many authorities are having to cut back on their leisure facilities, so it is something special for us to see a new leisure centre of this scale and quality open as part of a comprehensive approach to the regeneration of the town centre."

Wragge & Co's 16-lawyer Planning and Regeneration team is helping deliver the Government's sustainable communities agenda. It is one of the 15 teams forming part of the 27-partner, full-service Real Estate group. Alongside PFI/PPP and construction experts, it advises local authorities, housing associations and developers on a range of projects.

These include a £1.8 billion housing-led regeneration partnership in Solihull, a major social housing PFI scheme in Kent and transfers of council housing stock in Sheffield, Rochford and Plymouth. In the leisure sector, the team's specialists have advised on a £30 million leisure services PPP project for Solihull Council and a new £16 million theatre project in Dunstable.
