Best brains in ...

Large commercial projects involving a range of disciplines and working with commercial, clinical and financial advisers to find solutions on large healthcare projects.

Most challenging job you've ever done?

My role as general counsel to the Commercial Directorate of the Department of Health for nearly five years. This involved the provision of legal advice across a large number of contracts for clinical services. As Head of the Central Contract Management Unit, I managed a multi-disciplinary team of financial, clinical, commercial and legal experts. I was also the legal adviser for the Department's team dealing with the UK's preparations for the outbreak of pandemic flu.

What about outside the UK?

I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to act on a number of joint venture arrangements across Europe and the Middle East.

How do you get under the skin of a client business?

As a former in-house lawyer, I worked closely with various business units within each company. It is vital to understand the context and commercial drivers of any transaction and to remember that the legal advice is just one facet of any large project. Having an interest in and caring for the client's business is important in being able to provide legal support. Adopting the same approach in private practice enables me to really understand a client's requirements.

What's been written or said about you that you're most proud of?

"Robert is always measured, facilitative and creative."
