Best brains in ...
All of the major standard form process plant contracts used in the power generation industry, healthcare private finance initiatives (PFI), public private partnerships FI/PPP contracts, including National Health Service (NHS) Lift, industrial and distribution projects.
Highlight of your career so far?
Concluding a £350 million contract for the construction of a combined cycle gas turbine power station on behalf of E.ON.
Most challenging job you've ever done?
I was involved in negotiations with one of the few turbine manufacturers in the world, which impacts on negotiating position, and managing the competing concerns of all parties, its procurement people and in-house legal teams.
What about outside the UK?
Helping to co-ordinate the documents for the construction of data centres across Europe.
What's your definition of going the extra mile?
Arriving back at Manchester Airport following a romantic weekend in New York (with my wife!), I found that my presence was required at a completion meeting in Coventry. I travelled straight to the meeting - via home to drop off my wife, and commenced a series of complex negotiations involving detailed legal drafting. Needless to say, I hadn't had any sleep for 24 hours and with a body clock out of kilter, it was quite a challenge. But the job was completed to the client's satisfaction and no fatigue-induced errors in drafting have been found to date.
Best example of a creative legal solution?
Where a client was unable to fit its required works into one of the standard NEC3 option contracts, I drafted a hybrid form that enabled several options to be combined into one contract, removing the extra cost, delay and interface risks of using more than one contract. How do you get under the skin of a client's business?
I focus on where the client is trying to get to, rather than how they might get there. Usually the client has no concern about the latter. I make a point of understanding the actual and real risks faced by the client.
What's your single greatest contribution to Wragge & Co's corporate responsibility?
Joining the 'green' debate within the firm, I've made the suggestion that one of our major clients carries out an environmental audit on us, as it does for its non-professional suppliers.
What's been written or said about you that you're most proud of?
A quote from client service review: 'When working with Paul "the whole process runs like clockwork". The client did not want to be tied up in legal disputes and felt Paul "explains scenarios very well", has a "common sense approach" and is overall "fantastic".'
