Best brains in ...

Juggling a variety of different transactions at the same time and always keeping the end goal in mind. By combining a technical and commercial approach, I help bring transactions to a close with minimum fuss. I also boast a truly varied track record in asset finance work, including high-value asset and receivables finance securitisation, factoring, invoice discounting and syndicated lending.

Highlight of your career so far?

There are a lot of career high points, for many different reasons. In my role as head of legal within a large asset based lending house, I took on the challenge of re-establishing and integrating the legal function back into the business structure.

Most challenging job you've ever done?

There have been several. Highlights include negotiating and drafting a global vendor finance programme requiring several weeks of negotiating deeds for Korean, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwanese vendor entities. I also negotiated, drafted and managed a £700 million securitisation for a major asset based lending house.

In terms of the most unusual (considering my current role as a banking lawyer), I was required by the Botswana government to defend two murders. In 1995, all lawyers in Botswana were requested to assist the government to clear the backlog of prisoners charged with murder – murder being one crime in Botswana where legal representation was mandatorily required by the state because of capital punishment.

What about outside the UK?

Outside the UK, I was a commercial litigator in Botswana for four years. A highlight was successfully representing the Botswana government and Debswana (De Beers) in a number of high-profile industrial action cases that eventually resulted in the legislature having to amend the industrial action legislation.

What’s your top tip for client care?

My formula for great client care is maintaining clear lines of communications and not making promises that you can’t keep.

And what’s your best example of great client service?

Delivering an urgent application over a hot Easter weekend to a judge sitting out in his backyard. While I made my case, he swatted me with a fly swatter to keep away the flies! Another example would be spending almost a month living in hotels in Asia while I put together a global vendor finance program.

What’s been written or said about you that you’re most proud of?

Nothing as yet, except very bad school reports!
