Wragge & Co litigators secure Court of Appeal victory for Saudi businessman

Wragge & Co LLP Commercial Litigation team has secured a Court of Appeal victory and successfully recused a High Court judge.

Commercial litigation partner Nicola Mumford led the team that applied for the recusal of Mr Justice Singer from a multi-million pound divorce case. The team included director Tom Price, associate Harjinder Kaur, solicitor Mark Grant and paralegal Steven Franklin.

Mr Justice Singer made controversial comments about the team's Saudi client, Sheikh Khalid Ben Abdullah Rashid Al Fawaz, during the El Farargy v El Farargy High Court proceedings.

On 16 November the Court of Appeal ordered the Mr Justice Singer to step down from the case. Lord Justice Ward, who heard the appeal with two other judges, described the case as a "singularly unsatisfactory, unfortunate and embarrassing matter".

Nicola Mumford said: "We believe that Wragge & Co's application to recuse the judge was the right decision for the case and our client. The Court of Appeal ruling confirms this as a well-founded application".

Wragge & Co has one of the largest dispute resolution practices in the UK with 29 partners and 185 lawyers. The Commercial Litigation team completes a broad mix of domestic and international work for major names including Enterprise Inns, British Airways and Scottish & Newcastle.
